Official Statement of the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela on the evolution of the health of President Hugo Chávez

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reports on the evolution of the health of President Hugo Chávez, after the surgery performed in Havana, Cuba, on December 11.

After two months of a complicated post-operative process, the patient is conscious, maintains his intellectual functions, is in close communication with his government team. He is also leading the key tasks inherent to his post.

As reported earlier, the respiratory infection, arising in the course of the postoperative process, was controlled, but there is still a certain degree of failure.

Given this circumstance, which is being properly treated, Commander Chávez is now breathing through a tracheal tube, which temporarily makes it difficult for him to speak.

The medical team applies aggressive treatment for the underlying disease, which is not exempt from complications.

The patient cooperates with the treatment and rehabilitation in close coordination with the medical team.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela thanked the love, serenity, maturity and integrity of the Venezuelan people that have accompanied Commander Chávez in this battle and invites them to keep praying for his health.

This year, when we celebrate the bicentennial of the Admirable Campaign, this exemplary attitude of the Venezuelan people confirms that these are in fact the same admirable people who fought with our Liberator Simón Bolívar for Independence.

The Bolivarian government also ratifies its gratitude to Commander Fidel Castro and President Raúl Castro, to the medical team and all the Cuban people, for the love and care given to our president.

The Venezuelan people and other peoples of the world hope that Commander Chávez will overcome sooner than later these delicate circumstances to accompany his people in the way of new victories during the construction of the great homeland.

Long live Chávez!
